Glasses!

I have mentioned previously that my daughter got glasses, but I thought I would post about what that really means for a 3 year old.

Honestly I thought this would be a hellish process, I was so teary as we waited for the glasses to be made to her prescription, and just thinking about how I was going to manage my stubborn wee girl into wearing glasses scared me.  Then my sister mentioned that she had been googling (oops hadn't even occured to me!) and so I tried it, and found an amazing website for parents of young ones needing glasses. I really recommend the Little Four Eyes website for any parent in this situation.

My lovely sister also ordered some great books for Amelia about glasses, she is OBSESSED with this one and really it would be great even if glasses aren't needed. It has popups and pull tabs and glasses to try on Arlo!

My problem, is that there aren't many characters that wear glasses just as a matter of course. There are Peppa Pig and Charlie & Lola books about glasses, but they end up not needing glasses, so its a bit pointless really. I'm on the hunt for books/stories/characters in general that just wear glasses. I would love your help if you are aware of any.

So far I have
Simon Chipmunk and his girlfriend Jeanette
Halle in Doc McStuffins
Arthur.

and that's about it. Sad isn't it, when really there are quite a few young children who wear glasses.  If you have any suggestions, please comment! I have googled like crazy, but I think the ones I really want (not necessarily books about getting glasses) don't mention the fact that the characters wear glasses!

And I should mention that I needn't have worried, besides a visit to the optician on Day 5, a missing nose piece and a few bent bits, lol, Amelia has been awesome about wearing her glasses 99.99% of the time, not bad for a 3 year old!

And in case you are interested in why she needs glasses - its genetic for sure! Accomodative Esotropia

  2. She is adorable in her glasses! You are such a good mom to work at making it a nice experience for her. And maybe you should try your hand at writing the kind of book you are looking for. It sounds like there is a need for that kind of story that's not being met.

  3. My eldest was in glasses at 3yrs, and to be honest I think she was so pleased to finally see properly it was never an issue. Glasses for children are so much better today she looks very cute.

Harry Potter is a glasses wearer, but maybe a bit old for her yet. Winnie Flies Again, Fairy Four Eyes

  4. I started wearing glasses at 7 but definitely needed them probably from birth. I remember my early years like living in a fog. I would have been pleased to wear glasses and to be able to see clearly. I watched my daughter like a hawk to make sure she could see. Luckily she has her dad's good eyesight. But I wouldn't have thought twice if she needed glasses.

  5. Awwww, poor thing. I didn't know I was near sighted until I was 12 and at space camp, the teacher was writing on a whiteboard but I couldn't even see the markings. When I got my glasses the world was so detailed and beautiful. It probably took so long to figure it out because I was unschooled and spent most of my time reading.
I cannot really offer any advice other than if it is genetic do those family members wear glasses around her? Seeing an adult (or big kid) that she looks up to wearing glasses could help. I'm especially not helpful because getting my contacts was one of the most amazing experiences ever.

  6. I wore glaases from 3rd grade until 12 years ago when I had lasik. But they weren't kidding when they said over 40 and your vision goes to crap. I certainly need to go to the eye doctor. I don't know of any books off the top of my head but if I remember I'll ask my mom. She was an elementary school librarian for most of my growing up.

  7. She's such a cutie! I always wanted glasses but never needed them. By the time I was 11 and actually NEEDED glasses, no one believed me so I had to wait awhile before I could finally see again. When she gets a little older, like 6 or 7, Baby Sitters' Club Little Sister series is great for characters with glasses.

  8. Our daughter Georgia needed glasses at 3 years old, completely surprising mind you. What we found was that the square/rectangle glasses kept falling off, and when she lost them (it happens) we replaced them with specsavers ones that are more rounded and elastic, a much better fit (and cheaper and two for the price of one!). Amelia looks gorgeous in hers.
